1) Valley Idol, Jr. is singing competition, offering three $300 U.S. Savings Bond prize to three grand prize winners in the age categories of 8 yrs. -10 yrs; 11yrs to 14 years and 15 years to 17 years old. The competition will take place over 3 Saturdays at the Shea Theater in Turners Falls - May 9, 16 and May 23, 2009. All proceeds benefit the Shea Theater in Turners Falls, a non-profit organization.

2) Everyone who submits a registration form with the $20 entry fee will be invited to "audition" on the first morning of the competition, May 9, 2009. Auditions will consist of the contestants singing a cappella for 90 seconds. Each performance will be judged, using a numerical rating system, by a panel of three/four judges. The Shea Theater reserves the right to limit the number of contestants accepted to perform during the auditions.

3.) During the competition, the same song used to try-out for the 90 second performance on Round 1 can be sung in only one other round. Example:  90 seconds of “Over the Rainbow” may be sung to try-out on the first morning and again at the Final Round, but not for Round 2.  Vice-versa – the song that is used for the 90 second try-out may be sung at the next Saturday for Round 2, but a different song must be sung if the contestant makes it to the final round.  

4) The order of contestant performances on each morning of the competition will be determined by random order. Contestants may choose to sing with the music from a Karaoke CD provided by contestant or the contest D.J. for the semi-final and final round of competition or accompany themselves on an instrument.

5) After the final performance on May 9th, the contestants with the 10 highest scores in each age category, according to the judges, will advance to the next round of competition on May 16, 2009.

6) On May 16th, the 10 contestants will each perform a full song of their choice. The contestants with the five highest scores in each age category, according to the judges, will advance to the finals on May 23rd, 2009.

7) On May 23rd, the five contestants in each category will each perform 1 song. Each song will be judged separately by the judges, and scores will be added together from the previous weeks. The contestants with the top combined score will win the competition in each of the three age categories.

8) In case of a tie at any level of competition, the judges will vote on who gave the better performance. The results of that vote will break the tie. The judge’s decision will be final.

9) The $20 registration fee is not refundable if a contestant fails to show up for the audition. If a contestant does not show up for any morning of the competition, he/she will be automatically eliminated from the contest. All registration fees are non-refundable.

10) The Shea Theater, WHAI, WPVQ and all of the Valley Idol sponsors are not responsible for any personal external circumstances that may prevent a contestant from performing on any given morning.

11) Any contestant using foul language, or otherwise demonstrating poor sportsmanship in the opinion of any Valley Idol staff member, or found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, may be eliminated from the competition at the discretion of the Valley Idol staff working at the Shea Theater.

12) The image and/or voice of any contestant may be used for promotional purposes by The Shea Theater, WHAI and WPVQ or MCTV or GCTV with a waiver signed by a parent. This includes website exposure and possible broadcast on the radio.

13) Employees of radio stations WHAI and WPVQ and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter the competition.

14) The Valley Idol competition may be discontinued by the Shea Theater without notice if world events or the national mood so warrant.

15) This competition is open to any U.S. citizen aged 8 to 17 years of age up until the day before their 18th birthday.
